A Community for the Child Who Loves Learning
The Academy was founded not only to address the unmet need for classical education appropriate to any faith tradition, but also for a school that aggressively supports the intellectual orientation that is a defining attribute of some children. The child who finds joy in books and ideas and thoughtful conversation often finds too little peer support in settings dominated by social, recreational, or athletic priorities. The Academy offers such students a true learning community on the scale of an extended family, one marked by courtesy and gentility as well as academic achievement. At the Academy, these students find teachers of like temperament as mentors, both in preparation for the highest levels of education and in preparation for life.
Teachers know their subjects well and are passionate about teaching
and
ongoing self-education.
Class
sizes are limited to the students that can share a single table
and
engage in dialogue that develops thinking and speaking skills
Learning materials are models worthy of imitation and include books judged great by many generations.
Mastery of written language is grounded in the study of Greek and Latin for their unique ability to foster a subtle and refined intellect, as well as a deep understanding of language structure and usage.
Math is taught so as to develop logic and reasoning, as well as accurate problem solving skills.
Science instruction balances discovery through experimentation with rigorous theoretical foundations built through discourse and practice, as well as knowledge of Greek and Latin that facilitates learning of scientific terminology.
History is taught chronologically and at a meaningful depth, providing coherence and order that enables even young students to exercise their minds in scholarly ways. A sustained focus on the history of ancient Greece and Rome enables deep understanding of the foundations of western thought, arts, and sciences.
Offerings in choral and instrumental music and studio art develop individual talent as well as an appreciation of human creativity and western intellectual history.
Knowledge, ideas, and freedom of inquiry are valued for their own sake, recognizing that such theoretical approaches can be superior sources of creativity and innovation.
Moral and ethical sensibilities are fostered as products of human reason, an approach that complements religious teachings without undertaking them.
Rigorous standards are maintained in support of high, measurable achievement, enabling students to work in each discipline at their ability level, including the college level.
