A Visit by Dr. Gary Gregg,
author of The Sporran

Dr. Gary Gregg is director of the McConnell Center for Political Leadership at the University of Louisville, as well as an editor of several books on American political history and an occasional C-Span guest.   He is also the revered mentor of LCA math and science teacher Mrs. Mariya Salyer, one of his former McConnell Scholars.  Mrs. Salyer was one of the first to know that Dr. Gregg was at work on a children's novel, The Sporran.

The novel's formal release over the Labor Day Weekend at the Frazier History Museum resulted in record book sales and long lines for a signed copy, so we were honored when Dr. Gregg accepted Mrs. Salyer's invitation to speak about the book at our school!  In addition to outfitting a student volunteer with kilt and sporran, Dr. Gregg shared the many sources of the book's inspiration and answered questions from aspiring authors among LCA students with regard to his writing process.  Dr. Gregg then joined Upper School Students for lunch and a more in-depth discussion of his personal history and the book's development.    Parents reported hearing details about this special day for weeks!
Mrs. Salyer was proud to introduce her teacher to her students  – and her students to her teacher.
We learned that our Great Room
lends itself to a 'fireside chat'.
Dr. Gregg's shiny new sporran helped us see . . .
the unique character of this replica of his story's sporran.
A sporran is now on everyone's wish list!
